My research interests are focused on durability of concrete and reinforced concrete structures. Investigations on preventive measures include studies on the effectiveness of water repellent treatment of cement-based materials as chloride barrier. Chloride penetration into concrete exposed to sea water is studied experimentally and simulated. Emphasis is laid on durability under combined mechanical and environmental loads. Another aim is optimization of strain hardening cement-based materials (SHCC) and the potential of their application for repair and more durable structures is investigated. More recently my research activities have been extended to include sustainability of building materials and structures. This includes investigations into service life of reinforced concrete structures in order to minimize energy consumption and expenditures during the entire life-time of structures. Industrial by-products are tested with respect to their potential of reducing cement consumption. Another aim is minimizing the enormous mass flow in construction industry. Hobbies: As a hobby I like to play piano and to collect paintings, in particular German landscapes of the 19th century. Whenever time permits I go skiing or hiking. In addition I am a hobby wine-grower. |
